General Description:

Roof Rat has a pointed nose with a long tail (Tails are longer than the heads and bodies combined).  Adults weigh 5-10 oz.  Roof rats are located in tropical climates (Norh Carolina and all coastal areas into Texas and The coastal areas of California and Oregan).  Roof rats usually nest above ground in attics, ceilings, trees, and other locations.  They feed on Fruits and nuts.  Roof rats are omnivores, so they eat both meat and vegitation.  Require water often, which they usually can get through their food source.  Nocturnal.  Many rats eat their food source once they are back to their nesting areas.  Very good climbers.  Norway Rats sometimes called brown or sewer rats have a blunted nose, small ears, short tail (shorter than their head and body combined), adults weigh up to 1 pound.  Their burrows can be found along foundations of structures, beneath woodpiles, gardens, and fields.  Once in a building Norways are found in the basements or ground floor locations.  Gnawing holes from rats could be as large as 3 inches or more in diameter.  They prefer gnawing on wood, but also can damage electrical wiring.  The Norway Rat is in all 48 states.

Rat Control Methods:

First, You need to conduct an inspection looking for droppings, gnaw marks, live rodents or nests, or rodent sounds.

Second, you need to sanitize the environment, which includes removal of any food sources or water.  Remove any wood piles near the home.  Remove any trash or garbage.  Seal up any dogfood or bird seed.

Third, you need to exclude the rodents from entering the structure.  Seal any holes where rats can enter.  They can squeeze their bodies through a 1/2 inch gap.  Open doors, windows, dog doors, holes in crawl blocks, plumbing and conduit penetrations should be sealed.  Rat a Scat rodent repellant can be placed for temporary purposes until problem has been sealed.  They will also gnaw through wood and can create a 2-3 inch diameter hole in the wood for entry and exit.

Fourth, the Population Reduction occurs with T-Rex Snap Traps, Catchmaster Glue Boards, Propest Mice and Rat Lure, and Rodent Bait Blox.  If Rats travel in a 100-150 feet diameter from their nesting area, you want to space traps or place bait boxes every 10 to 30 feet along the interior perimeter of the crawl space or attic where the activity is suspected.  You can even purchase Protecta Rat Bait stations and place T-Rex snap traps inside, so no kids or pets will gain access to the tamper-resistant bait boxes.  Exterior Protecta Rat boxes can be placed along the outside foundation and montiored every 5-10 days to check if the bait has been eaten.  If after a couple weeks, the bait has not been ate, you may want to move to another location.
