Brief Biology:

Fungus Gnats and Fruit Flies are common around homes between late summer and early fall.  Fruit flies lay their eggs on ripened fruit or vegetables.  Larva become present in a few days, and begin eating.  Fungi is their main source of food.  This develops in drains, plant pots, and other damp locations.  Their population size can increase quickly. 

Treatment Methods:

Eliminate potential breeding sites

Sanitation:  Trash containers, potted indoor plants, drains, damp paper products in the basement area, and fruit and vegetable storage open to the air.

If container with fruit or vegetables are infested, throw away the product and clean container with hot soapy water. 

Make sure that trash container is cleaned, and no additional moisture is located at the bottom of the can due to a split trash bag. 

 If housplants are suspected of being infested, moderate the amount of water the plants are receiving to dry out the pot, and add some dust formulation or granular formulation to kill of the larva. 

Basement area can have excess moisture, which could become breeding locations for the pests.  You can reverse these affects by adding a dehumidifier to reduce moisture contents in the basement.
