Carpenter Bee Identification
Adult Body length is about 1/2 to an inch. They feed on pollen and nector. Carpenter Bees overwinter as adults in old nest galleries. They mate in April early may. The male has a yellow face and the female is black.
Carpenter Bee nesting areas
Carpenter Bees nest in wood while Bumble Bees nest in the ground. Carpenter Bees make nests by tunneling into wood. Each nest has a single entrance; however, the nest may have adjacent tunnels. Carpenter bees do not eat wood, but they use the frass to build walls within the nest as partitions for each of thier eggs. Carpenter Bees resemble bumble bees, but Carpenter Bees abdomen is bare and shiny black. Bumble Bees have a hairy abdomen with some kinds of yellow markings
Professional Pest Control Treatment Methods:
Professionals detect a Carpenter Bee infestation by identifying round holes about 1/2 inch in diameter, and saw dust called frass underneath the holes. Old nest can be used year after year by carpenter bees. Holes are usually found on the underside of wood surfaces including soffits, decks, fence posts, window frames, ect. Females are the only bees that have the capacity to sting, but they are not aggressive. Females tend to nest in all types of wood, but they prefer weathered non-painted wood. Females tend to begin boring nesting areas in late spring and early summer. You can treat with liquid insecticides with residual before the season begins, but if boringof the wood has begun, use dust formulations and blow them directly into the hole (one or two puffs from a hand bellow). Do not seal the hole until the season is complete. Then Caulk or putty and paint areas of infestation.
